Does 5.1 surround really add anything to music?
I've recently gotten into 5.1 surround music, and I've got to say that I love it. Personally it brings a huge sense of space that you can't get with a regular CD or audio file - it brings you into the 'environment' of the song, so to speak. Skylarking by XTC is a far better album in surround sound because of the mesmerising whirl of sound effects, and The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails is a much more immersive experience to me, personally.
My question is, does it actually add anything to music for many people, is it the closest thing to a live experience that you can get at home, or is it just another gimmick that'll die off in a few years?
